Anna’s research focuses on the intersections of gender and religion with a particular emphasis on corporeality, sexuality and ritual creativity. She has done research on the following themes:


–  vernacular Christianity in Spain, in particular the cult of the dark statue of the Christ of Lepanto in the cathedral of Barcelona


–  alternative pilgrimages to shrines dedicated to saint Mary Magdalene or holding dark Madonna statues in France


–  Neopaganism and Feminist spirituality in traditionally Catholic countries of Southern Europe such as Italy, Spain and Portugal


–  The sacralization of the menstrual cycle and the movement for menstrual awareness in California


–  Neoshamanism and sacred journeys to Peru


Anna has recently started a new research project on the sacralization of motherhood in Portugal funded by the Portuguese Foundation of Science and Technology (FCT)
